When negative thoughts about your body rear their head, ask yourself where they're coming from, urges psychologist Margo Maine, Ph.D. Spoiler alert: Culture holds a malicious megaphone. “A lot of our self-hatred comes from society,” she says. “I have a patient in her 50s who sees everything she doesn’t like about her body as a character flaw—society tells her that.” Just knowing that so many of our self-defeating thoughts come from outside ourselves can help us take back control. “I like to say your body is not a democracy—only you get a vote.”
