Blooming flowers and budding trees are supposed to be welcome signs of spring. But for the 50 million of us with seasonal allergies, pollen can trigger sniffling, sneezing, itchy eyes and other draining symptoms. And even prescription meds may not deliver adequate relief. A study in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion found that only 34% of allergy sufferers were satisfied with prescribed treatments. To the rescue: natural strategies that ease stubborn symptoms effectively
Enjoy 'upscale' onions
Shallots are a chef’s favorite for their slightly sweet, delicate taste that’s been described as a cross between red and yellow onions. And findings in the Asian Pacific Journal of Allergy and Immunology suggest that enjoying 1½ shallot bulbs daily can significantly ease allergy symptoms such as stuffiness, sneezing and eye irritation within four weeks. Credit goes to a compound called quercetin, which has a natural antihistamine action. Tip: Fat enhances the absorption of quercetin, so add olive oil to your veggies when cooking.
