The sugary delights that take us straight back to our childhood days
Childhood memories have a way of sticking – like toffee to your teeth. Who could forget the thrill of big jars lined up on shelves, weighed out by the quarter and tipped into little paper bags? Sweets such as these weren't just sugary treats, they were little moments of joy, shared between friends, stashed in pockets, or savoured on the walk home from school. Here, we take a look back at some favourites.
Timeless classicsWhile many childhood favourites have faded into the past, some have stood the test of time. Take sherbet lemons, with their tangy citrus shell and fizzy sherbet centre. These citrusy classics have been brightening up British sweet shops since the 19th century. Rhubarb and custard, inspired by the classic British dessert, emerged in the early 20th century. The sharp, rhubarb tang mellowed by a smooth custard flavour earns them their place as one of our favourite nostalgic sweets.
