Seasonal sparkle

You may not venture into the garden much in winter, but it pays to grow some seasonal bloomers to sparkle through the gloom. Where you plant them is key to savouring their uplifting effect. This could mean a spot where you can see them from a living-room window or in a container by the front door. If plants are scented, keep them within sniffing distance.

Bountiful baskets

Hanging baskets aren't just for summer. A tapestry of green foliage and jewel-bright flowers makes a striking display. Start with small, hardy evergreens, like a trailing ivy or a red-berried skimmia, then add in pretty florals. Options include winter-flowering heather (Erica carnea), hellebore, hardy cyclamen and viola. For extra sparkle, thread a strand of solar fairy lights through the lot.
