Something was missing from Roxanne's life - but what was it?
-
I've loved the Beatles for more years than I care to mention. But one afternoon a while ago, when I heard their song Help! on the radio, it had a strange effect on me. I was left with the feeling that something was missing from my life.
My job as a teaching assistant made me smile every day, and I had a loving family and amazing friends. My marriage had ended in divorce four years before, but it was all very amicable. I was perfectly content on my own.
When the song had finished, I called my mum. She's my go-to person whenever I'm troubled. We had a brief chat, then it all came pouring out - that I realised something was missing from my life. 'The problem is, Mum, I have no idea what it is.'
She thought for a moment, then... 'All you need is a hobby.'
'Thanks, but if you're suggesting that I take up embroidery or dressmaking, forget it. I can barely sew on a button.'
'Too true,' she chuckled. 'If I were you, I'd give Google a go.'
Dad gave Mum a smartphone for her birthday. Ever since then, if she's asked a tricky question, she looks for the answer online.
I said I'd give it a try. Of course, when I searched for 'hobbies', there were so many, I felt swamped.
