Discover the summer tricks that can boost your cognitive health
THROW BACK THE CURTAINS
Natural daylight is crucial for brain health, helping regulate mood, sleep and cognitive function. A lack of it is linked to depression, which recent research* ties in with an increased risk of dementia in midlife and later life. 'The potential links between depression and dementia are complex,' says Jacob Brain from Nottingham University, 'and may include chronic inflammation, hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation, vascular changes, alterations to neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitter imbalances.'
Have a brain-booster breakfast
Try muesli and yogurt with berries, nuts and seeds, or eggs on sourdough. A breakfast of slow-realising carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats is best for supporting brain health.
HAVE PEOPLE OVER FOR A BARBECUE
'Socialising with friends or family is a great way to stimulate the mind and fight against cognitive decline,' says GP Dr Donald Grant**. 'It can reduce stress, strengthen neural pathways and improve memory. Interacting with others also tests our ability to process different emotions; without this stimulation, loneliness can cause brain health to deteriorate quickly.'
