BREAST CANCER Are you checking your breasts correctly?

In the fight against the disease, these steps could make a difference
-
An estimated 44% of all women don't check their breasts regularly*. And many of us are unsure how to do it properly. As with any type of cancer, early detection and diagnosis is the key to saving lives. In addition, at least 30% of breast cancer cases are considered preventable through lifestyle changes**, which is why reducing your risk and getting to know what's normal for you is so important, as well as attending breast screening appointments when you are invited. Follow our expert advice about what you need to know.
KNOW YOUR NORMAL
The NHS recommends doing a breast check every month, at the same point in your cycle (if you have periods). You'll get to know how your breasts look and feel, and when to alert your GP to any changes. Try feeling your breasts or chest lying down or in the shower, too, as different positions might help you spot something.
Starting with the right breast, move your left fingers, keeping them flat and together, around the breast in a small circle from the outside to the centre.
Vary the amount of pressure as you go and assess all levels of the breast tissue, including the nipple area.
Put your right arm behind your head, checking up into the armpit.
Make sure you feel up into your collarbone area, too. Then switch sides and check the other breast.
SYMPTOMS TO LOOK FOR* A change in your breast shape, outline or skin – eg, dimpling and puckering.
* Any new lump, lumpiness, thickening or different ‘feel’ in your breast, nipple or armpit.
