The New Dealbreaker

In 2020 Saumitra Khan, an MP from Bishnupur constituency, representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), issued a divorce notice to his wife, Sujata Mondal Khan, just one day after she became a member of the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress Party (TMC).

Ankita, 25 broke up with her boyfriend when he made a ridiculing remark, “Studying Political Science at Delhi University, is turning you into a feminist.”

The Internet was shocked when a man in the US cried for help. He said his wife sent him divorce papers after she got to know that he voted for Trump. He also said, “I am shocked that I married somebody who is willing to throw away our entire lives because of Politics.”

Politics is not only a complex subject for many of us; it is unavoidable. It resembles that unexpected visitor at a gathering who demands to lead every discussion.

It has seeped into our life, quietly entering WhatsApp groups and subtly disrupting conversations around the water cooler at work. Political disagreements are frequently overlooked without a moment’s pause. Although it is simple for Phuphaji’s political discourses to engage in this, having a partner with fundamentally different political beliefs can put a strain on the essence of your relationship. Politics holds a very important space in our relationships as well. To steer clear this idea, when one creates a profile on Tinder or Shaadi.com, or even before swiping left and right, we make sure to check the other person’s political inclination.
