SPILLING THE TEA

More than half of all Aussies are regular tea drinkers, consuming an average 9.5 cups a week. But how much do you really know about what makes the perfect cuppa? Will Dixon from Yorkshire Tea says it all comes down to the perfect blend of aroma, flavour, body, finish, and balance.

“Learning the nuances of tea tasting does take a lot of time and effort, as the individual tastes can be very subtle,” he says. “It takes years to master tasting, but the great thing about tea is that there is always something new to learn.”

Even small changes to the brewing process can affect quality. So grab a cuppa and get ready to learn about the art of making tea!

START AFRESH

“One of the biggest mistakes is not using fresh water,” Will says. “Using water that has not been aerated, which happens when it comes out of the tap and into your kettle, and boiling it more than once lowers the oxygen levels which flattens the taste.” If your tea goes cold, avoid the temptation to reheat. “I’d always recommend starting afresh and making a new brew, as if something's worth doing, then it’s worth doing properly.”
