TOSSING THE TUNA

Jacqui Hockaday is a sporting legend in Tumby Bay on the Spencer Gulf in South Australia. She's won Australian titles in competitive kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding, but she holds a more unusual record as a champion tuna tosser, too!

At the annual Tunarama Festival, which attracts both national and international competitors, Jacqui's record tuna throw is 11.12 metres.

“I watched the tuna toss as a kid and always wanted to do it. As a kitesurfer, I have a lot of core and upper body strength and can whip myself around in pretty strong winds. I used that to my advantage,” says mum Jacqui, 43, who is quick to point out that real fish aren’t used in the competition!

When competitors meet Mimi Zhang, they underestimate her. But she's a petite powerhouse who can eat huge amounts – and fast. The remedial massage therapist is a champion competitive eater known as “Mimi the Mini Monster”. She discovered her unusual talent at a mall in 2019.
