The best things in life are free
At a time when most things keep getting more expensive, the library remains free and open to everyone. Around 35 per cent of Aussies are card-carrying members, but if it’s been a while since your last visit, a trip could be overdue.
While many libraries are reporting a surge in teen and young adult members, they also provide a welcoming community for young families with kids, as well as seniors and all age groups in between.
Physical books remain a major drawcard but you might be surprised at what else is available, from free audiobooks, music and movies to community events, workshops and more. Here are a few things your library card can do!
GET APPYIf there’s a recent bestseller you’ve been dying to check out, your library might have a digital version you can borrow for free. Many libraries have extensive ebook collections (as well as audiobooks and magazines) that can be accessed through apps like Libby, along with similar options that cater specifically to kids. They work on most smartphones and tablets as well as some e-readers that support ePUB. If you’re unsure, ask your local library.
