Every child is unique, and as we discover more about neurodivergent conditions like autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), experts are also finding that therapy can come in traditional and non-traditional forms.

As a social worker and equine-assisted psychotherapist, Sarah Hayden is also informed by personal experience as a mum to two neurodivergent daughters, including Heartbreak High actress Chloe Hayden.

EQUINE THERAPY

Equine therapy is a psychological intervention that integrates horses into the therapeutic process. This therapeutic approach leverages the bond between humans and horses to promote physical, emotional and social development. For neurodivergent kids, equine therapy can be a joyful and engaging experience that also enhances various skills. We know that many autistic girls, in particular, are obsessed with horses, so it is a natural connection to make.

Horses are highly intuitive animals, capable of responding to subtle cues from their handlers. Their sensitivity allows them to connect deeply with people, including those who are neurodivergent, and their non-judgemental and patient nature creates a safe, supportive environment in which children can thrive.
