Forget sex, the real issue in relationships is money, so find out how to clear those financial hurdles together

The money WARS

Did you know that finances are the No 1 cause of arguments between couples? Almost two-thirds of us who row with our partner say we disagree over them, according to research by insurer Royal London.

It seems that we find it easier to discuss childcare, sex and even household chores with each other. Everything from different earnings, priorities and attitudes to borrowing can cause quarrels - especially if money is tight.

The research also found that a third of couples admit that they are incompatible with their partner when it comes to spending and saving, while a similar proportion keep financial secrets from their partner, such as hiding their savings or debts.

PAYING THE PRICE

While it may initially not sound like a big deal - we're often brought up to believe that overall compatibility is what to look for in a partner-left unchecked, money issues can cause relationships to crack.

It's something that family law solicitor Rosalind Fitzgerald, from Rayden Solicitors, hears frequently when discussing reasons for separation and divorce. 'Attitudes to spending and financial abuse are hot topics,' she explains. 'A lower-earning spouse might complain about financial control, where the higher earner does not appreciate the role of a stay-at-home parent. Meanwhile, the higher earner might complain about the lack of appreciation for their role in bringing in the money, and the pressure to keep earning. Relationships with mismatched money expectations also tend to be extremely acrimonious when they split.
