Cure a COLD IN 24 HOURS!

DID YOU KNOW?

On average, we get between two and five colds a year - and about will hit harder when you're run-down. They're caused by viruses, rather than bacteria, so antibiotics won't help shift it faster.

It's that time of year when many of us are 'under the weather'. Woke up with a cold brewing? 'While there's no cure, there are several things you can do to help relieve symptoms,' explains Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots. Here's your action plan to feel better, in just one day.

7am Take your temperature

As we discovered during the COVID-19 pandemic, a temperature check is a quick and effective way to detect if you're ill. The most hygienic thermometers are digital and no-contact-try the Braun TempleSwipe Forehead Thermometer, £25, argos.co.uk, which is colour-coded to indicate a high temperature. Reading above 38C? The NHS advises that you stay at home, monitor symptoms and try to avoid contact with others.

8am Pop a painkiller

The best way you can treat a cold is by having lots of rest, plus taking over-the-counter painkillers. 'These can bring down a temperature and zap headaches,' explains GP Dr Sarah Jarvis. Paracetamol and inflammation-reducing ibuprofen can be used together, but you must be vigilant - always read the packaging carefully and speak to your pharmacist for dosage advice on taking them together.

9am Enjoy a juicy breakfast

Get a dose of vitamin C. 'It helps reduce the severity of colds because it bolsters your immune system,' says Dr Donald Grant, clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy. Kick off the day with one or two of these:

  • 1 kiwi fruit
  • 1 small bowl of strawberries
