Growing up in an Iranian household, wearing shoes in the house was unheard of Taking off my shoes at the door after school was part of my routine. You can imagine my shock visiting a mate's house and seeing them stamping around in their outdoor trainers. I vividly remember my mum asking workmen to remove their boots, or making them put bags over their feet before coming in. It seemed funny at the time, but I totally get why she did it- who would want all that dirt and dust being trampled across the carpet? In my house we have Persian rugs, and the idea of people walking across them in dirty shoes is a no-no.
