Wise up to the times to buy

There’s a season for everything, as the old adage goes. So you won’t be surprised to find that timing your purchases wisely can make a big difference to the cost.

According to price comparison site Idealo, shoppers could save up to 60%, on average, depending on when you buy.

The early May bank holiday weekend, for instance, is a good time to bag a bargain on domestic electrical items like dishwashers, microwaves, mixers and blenders.

‘Consumers should have their wits about them when it comes to shopping for bigger-ticket items,’ says Katy Phillips, senior brand and communications manager at Idealo. ‘There’s usually a best time to buy during the year, which is influenced by market demand and seasonality.’

You can track price changes easily on household goods by setting alerts on comparison sites such as PriceRunner, Idealo and camelcamelcamel - but what about everything else?
