Fez el Bali - the medina - is the oldest part of Fez and the largest pedestrianised urban zone in the world. Its narrow streets are lined with traders, selling everything from hand-woven rugs to glinting brass lanterns, colourful pottery and jewelled kaftans. Finding your way around the labyrinth of 9,500 alleys can be intense and challenging. Your best bet is to kick off with a guided tour until you get your bearings.
