The number of Premium Bond prizes that go unclaimed rises each year. There's currently more than £100m worth, which feels wrong four years into a cost-of-living crisis.

While 99% of prizes are matched up with winners, 2.6m prizes languish unclaimed. The problem is many of us have forgotten we have Premium Bonds, we've moved house without updating our address, or we've simply lost track of bonds that were gifted to us when we were children.

While there is a system for tracing lost accounts, critics say the process is too complicated, and bonds issued before digitisation are much harder to trace.

That said, it could be time well spent. In 2023, a £100k prize was paid out, after a tracing request, to beneficiaries of a £10 bond holder in Scotland who had won big within a year of their death*.
