If too much is leaving you strung out, here's how to curb it without being a total buzzkill

Can't start the day without a caffeine fix? That morning buzz from a strong coffee, a builder's brew or a sugary energy drink is a ritual for many of us. But if your caffeine intake is leading to jittery highs and harsh crashes, or leaving you feeling drained, anxious and struggling to sleep, it might be time to cut back.
Check your meds
Some common, over-the-counter cold, flu, headache and pain medications contain added caffeine, so make sure you're not getting an extra hit without even knowing. 'Check the ingredients list on the packet and switch to an alternative caffeine-free medication to reduce this hidden source,' suggests Dr Deborah Lee (doctorfox.co.uk).
Swap to decaf
Can't live without tea or coffee? Switch to decaffeinated versions. 'For most healthy, non-pregnant or breastfeeding adults, up to three cups of regular coffee a day is generally considered safe,' says Dr Alexandra Moorhouse from Wellsoon Private Healthcare (practiceplusgroup.com). 'Making a rule to choose herbal or decaf options in the afternoon and staying well hydrated, can help you cut down without triggering withdrawal symptoms.'
Drink from a smaller mug
