Doubts holding you back? Try these tips to radiate selfbelief
-

Trying new things, speaking your mind and socialising are all part of life. But for those of us with low self-esteem, even the simplest of actions and activities can feel challenging, triggering nerves and anxiety. Our expert tips can help you become more self-assured.
1 Visualise success
Whenever you next face a challenge and lack self-belief, imagine a time you felt good and strong. 'Really embody the mindset you were in as it will help reset your brain and reduce any fear,' says clinical psychologist Dr Hamira Riaz. Plus, there's truth in the phrase 'fake it until you make it'. It's possible to feel better by simply pretending you're not shaking inside - it works because when you're doing the things a confident person would do, you gain skills and your confidence grows.
2 Prepare some conversation starters
Going into a social situation and not sure what to say? 'Have a think about who might be there and plan a few questions in advance that you can ask them,' says confidence coach Swarna Helena (swarnahelena.com). 'People appreciate genuine interest being shown in them and it will draw attention away from you, giving you more time to put your thoughts together.'

Try team sports at any age
Here's a common train of thought among some (those who haven't yet discovered the joys of movement!) that any exercise which benefits our health, strengthens bones and muscle and aids in the quest to reduce fat stores has to be unpleasant. So unpleasant, in fact, that we find ourselves doing anything to avoid it.
