Flights of fancy
The Australian Women's Weekly
|May 2023
When our columnist and her hubby found themselves stuck in a boredom rut, an unexpected new hobby arrived to save the day.
Shared interests, they say, help keep the divorce lawyers away. Husband and I had discussed this and thrown around a few ideas: dance lessons, a mosaic course, early morning group exercise, learning to play the piano together, gin mixing workshops, golf (his suggestion), crochet (mine). We hadn’t got further than the discussion point when a shared interest literally flew into our life.
It was perfect for us in that it provided many of the elements we find interesting and engaging. We were required to solve a challenging puzzle the likes of which we haven’t seen since it was Professor Plum in the drawing room with a candelabra in the great Cluedo marathon of 2002.
There was lots of tension and mystery really pumping our adrenal glands with the thrill of the chase and most importantly for husband, it had a physical element.
Oh, we were competitive too, keeping a tally and regularly checking our scores against each other. Honestly, it really kept us on our toes and ignited in us a passion we’d long forgotten. I highly recommend an infestation of wardrobe and pantry moths to any married couple looking to liven things up on the domestic front, I really would.
