USE WHAT YOU HAVE As the seasons change and a cosier vibe is needed, look around at what you have before buying new pieces. Simply working in a few warmer colours and richer tones to complement existing furniture and soft furnishings is often all that’s needed.

ECHO THE OUTDOORS Bringing in rich, autumnal colours from outdoors is an easy way to warm up a chilly room. From warm oranges, reds and soft golds to deep green, mushroom and chocolate brown, layer up a mix of earthy colours to make everything feel more cosy.

START SMALL Swapping smaller items like cushions and throws or blankets and pillows for autumnal-coloured pieces will make instant impact without costing a fortune. Adding in a new lampshade, vase or a few candles in tonal shades can help sew a new scheme together.

CHANGE THE BACKDROP Painting walls is an easy way of introducing extra warmth into a room, but that needn’t mean wall-to-wall colour. Painting just a small area can have the desired effect – try a half-painted wall behind a sofa or bed, or a contrast colour inside an alcove.
