Kerre escapes our winter for a Fiji getaway with her two favourite humans

After I rediscovered Fiji last year, I came straight home and booked a week at the same resort for the same time a year hence.

The seven days with the grandkids and my daughter in the tropical paradise was so blissful, idyllic and easy, I wanted to do it all again. My son-in-law declared he wouldn't be staying at home next time, so we paid a deposit on two bures at Musket Cove – a family lagoon bure for them and a beachfront bure in the adults-only part of the resort for me.

But as time went by, life intruded. Unexpected expenses cropped up. Work environments evolved and all of a sudden, a week in Fiji seemed like an impossibly frivolous use of time and disposable income. The deadline for full and final payment was looming and we had a family council.

In the end, the big kids felt it wasn't the right time for them to enjoy a South Pacific getaway. They both had big projects at work and a car to pay off.
