As luxury, privacy, and innovation take flight, Ajay Awtaney finds out how airlines continue to redefine travel at 40,000 feet

THE GOLDEN AGE OF TRAVEL

IT'S 2025, AND WHILE some claim that the 'golden age' of air travel has ended, it continues to evolve. From the days when airlines offered a lounging area on the upper deck of the Boeing 747, we've progressed to providing a bar inside the A380. Airlines are focused on offering facilities that make travel more comfortable and homely, especially in the premium cabins. We highlight some top luxury experiences for the comfort-seeking traveller.

Shower On Board

Emirates made waves in 2008 by introducing showers on its A380 aircraft. These showers are available exclusively to First Class passengers on Emirates flights operated by the A380. A few years later, Etihad followed suit by installing showers on their A380, but only for passengers in First Class Apartments and The Residence. The Emirates' shower suites feature marble finishes, luxurious toiletries, and fluffy towels, creating a spa-like environment. Each First Class passenger is allocated five minutes of water flow for a quick shower. Be sure to book your appointment with the onboard crew to secure your spot. The Emirates A380 operates between Mumbai and Bengaluru.

In 2014, Etihad’s introduction of the A380 marked a bold move with the creation of “The Residence,” a class above First Class aimed at attracting private jet travellers. Located at the front of the upper deck, The Residence is a multi-room suite in the sky, accommodating up to two guests. It includes a private bedroom with a double bed, an ensuite shower, and a separate living area. Etihad provides an escort through security and immigration, allowing you to relax in a dedicated lounge away from the crowds. Etihad operates the A380 between Abu Dhabi, London, Paris, Singapore, and Toronto.
