Tamil Nadu, a picturesque State lodged in the southern part of India, is renowned for its blend of cultural heritage and ancient landmarks. However, this region also boasts a remarkable array of wildlife, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and those passionate about conservation. Tamil Nadu is indeed home to 18 wildlife sanctuaries where nature truly gets to be itself, preserving and safeguarding the region's unique flora and fauna. Here's a glimpse at some of them.
VANDALUR ZOO
Situated in the heart of Chennai, Arignar Anna Zoological Park, also known as Vandalur Zoo, is the abode of various animals, including lions, monkeys, elephants and deer.
Here, you can embark on a safari to observe animals in their natural element. The park also features a modern reptile house showcasing various snakes, lizards, and crocodiles. In addition to the wildlife, it offers family-friendly amenities such as playgrounds and picnic spots. Finally, for bird enthusiasts, the zoo boasts an aviary that houses tropical birds and an aquarium that showcases marine life.
Visiting hours: The zoo operates from 9 am to 5 pm every day except Tuesday, with ticket booking concluding at 4.30 pm.
Entry cost: The ticket prices are INR 200 for adults above 12 years, INR 50 for children aged 5 to 12, and free for infants between 0 and 5 years.
Special attractions: Lion and Deer Safari Parks, Exotic Birds, Walk Through Aviary, Biocentre, Forest Museum, Butterfly Park, Aquarium, Children's Park, Nocturnal Animal House, Forest Birds, Reptile Session, and Wetland Aviary.
Getting there: The zoo is 6 km from Tambaram, 4 km from Mudichur, and about 15 km from Chennai Airport.
