Perspectives on Automotive Sound Design - In the Era of Electric Vehicles
audioXpress
|June 2023
From combustion engine vehicles to fully electric vehicles, and from sound systems in the car to sound design and synthesis for the car itself, everything is changing in the automotive industry. This conversation with two members of the DSP Concepts automotive team with vast experience in the field, John Whitecar, VP of Product Management, and Steve Ernst, Head of Business Development, offers valuable insights on how things are evolving.

As the automotive industry moves toward a fully electrified future, sound design is becoming increasingly integral to the driving experience. Phasing out the internal combustion engine is better for the environment, but the unintended consequence is the loss of the sonic masking of the engine mechanics. That means exposing the tire, electric engine, and other unfamiliar and discordant sounds. It also means losing the built-in safety aspect of the gas-powered engine: Its unmistakable sound draws people's attention, especially in close proximity when moving away is a life saver.
In addition to safety, sound design has opened up another way for OEMs to build up brand character. By developing the internal soundscape and a distinctive external sound profile, manufacturers can differentiate from competitors while deepening the sense of connection for owners.
A wave of sonic innovation and creativity is likely to follow the rising popularity of EVs and the gradual advancement of autonomous vehicles. Aside from the lofty brand and artistic developments, the legal regulations now in place in major markets make sound design mandatory for EVs.
