UBER COMMITS $100 MILLION TO BUILD ROBOTAXI FAST-CHARGING NETWORK

Uber Technologies Inc. is deepening its bet on autonomous mobility with a plan to invest more than $100 million in dedicated fast-charging hubs for robotaxi fleets across major U.S. cities. The company said it will begin building infrastructure in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Dallas, three markets central to its expanding autonomous vehicle strategy.

The move signals Uber’s shift from simply partnering with self-driving developers to actively shaping the ecosystem that will support large-scale deployment. By investing directly in charging infrastructure, Uber aims to control one of the most critical operational variables for electric robotaxis: uptime.

FAST-CHARGING AS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Electric autonomous vehicles rely heavily on rapid charging cycles to maintain fleet availability. Downtime for charging can significantly reduce profitability, particularly in dense urban markets where demand peaks throughout the day. Uber’s new hubs will focus on DC fast-charging systems capable of quickly replenishing battery capacity during short pit stops between rides.
