Techlife News #716

SpaceX's Starlink is breaking into general aviation, offering high-speed satellite internet for smaller aircraft through its Mini terminal, a compact device that delivers broadband in the sky.

STARLINK EXPANDS CONNECTIVITY TO GENERAL AVIATION

The system, designed for portability, allows pilots and passengers to access realtime weather data, navigation tools, and communications without relying on ground-based signals. Certified for use as a portable electronic device in uncertified aircraft, the Mini terminal connects to Starlink's low Earth orbit satellites, providing a reliable alternative to traditional aviation Wi-Fi systems that often struggle in remote areas or at high altitudes.

imageThe expansion targets general aviation pilots flying single-engine planes like the Cessna 172 or Cirrus SR22, where permanent installations are not yet approved. With antenna sizes reduced to 12 by 10 inches and weighing just 2.5 pounds, the Mini fits easily in cockpits, drawing power from the aircraft's electrical system.

Starlink's entry into general aviation comes as demand for inflight connectivity grows, with 60% of pilots reporting a need for better data access for weather and flight planning.

imageThe system's low-latency connections, under 100 milliseconds, make it suitable for real-time applications, but limitations like speed caps and plan restrictions require careful selection for specific flight needs.

COMPATIBLE PLANS AND PERFORMANCE

Starlink offers tailored service plans for general aviation, balancing speed, coverage, and cost.

The Local Priority plan, at $65 monthly, supports ground speeds up to 100 knots with unlimited data over land, ideal for low-speed flights in continental areas. For faster aircraft, the Mobile Priority plan, priced at $250 monthly, handles speeds up to 350 knots, while the Global Priority option, at $1,500 monthly, extends to 550 knots and includes offshore coverage, suiting transoceanic routes.
