OPENAI TAPS DOLORES HUERTA AND PHILANTHROPY EXPERTS FOR FOR-PROFIT TRANSITION
Techlife News
|April 19, 2025
OpenAI has enlisted civil rights pioneer Dolores Huerta and three philanthropy specialists to form a temporary advisory board, tasked with guiding its charitable initiatives as the company seeks to transform into a for-profit public benefit corporation, a decision announced in a press release outlining its strategic shift.
-
The board, led by Daniel Zingale, has 90 days to deliver non-binding recommendations to ensure OpenAI’s nonprofit arm thrives amid a $40 billion fundraising effort. For social activists, AI researchers, and industry watchers, this move signals OpenAI’s intent to reconcile its commercial ambitions with its founding mission in a $90 billion AI software market.
Huerta, joined by Monica Lozano, Robert Ross, and Jack Oliver, will advise on how OpenAI’s philanthropy can address AI’s societal impacts, as the company navigates California Attorney General approval for its restructuring. The transition, valuing OpenAI at $300 billion, has drawn scrutiny from co-founder Elon Musk and nonprofit groups like LatinoProsperity, who question the handling of its charitable assets. OpenAI insists its nonprofit will focus on health, education, and science, with plans to expand staffing, per company statements.
This advisory effort unfolds against economic challenges, with rising chip costs impacting AI firms, yet OpenAI’s backing from SoftBank and others supports its pivot. The inclusion of Huerta, a labor legend, and diverse advisers aims to bolster public trust, as OpenAI seeks to maintain its ethical footing in a competitive landscape where AI’s promise and risks are under intense scrutiny.
