LandSpace, one of China’s most prominent private aerospace firms, completed a major step forward in the development of reusable launch systems on Wednesday, successfully sending its Zhuque-3 rocket to orbit but falling short in the booster’s attempted return.

LANDSPACE'S ZHUQUE-3 REACHES ORBIT AS BOOSTER RECOVERY TEST FALLS SHORT IN KEY MOMENT FOR CHINA'S COMMERCIAL SPACE SECTOR

The effort marked China's first private-sector trial of a controlled first-stage landing, placing the company at the center of a fast-advancing commercial space race that Beijing sees as essential to long-term competitiveness with American providers.

The Zhuque-3 launched from a remote desert site in northwestern China and reached orbit as planned. The flight's second stage delivered its payload as expected, but the first stage did not achieve a controlled return to the landing pad. LandSpace confirmed shortly after the mission that the booster experienced an anomaly after ignition during the landing phase, preventing a soft touchdown. Debris came down at the edge of the planned recovery zone, and the company said no injuries were reported.

LandSpace described the incident as a setback within a mostly successful test sequence, saying it intends to conduct a full review and continue progressing reusable-rocket verification on upcoming missions. Even with the failed recovery, the launch positions the company ahead of domestic competitors as it moves toward developing low-cost, rapid-turnaround flight systems.

The recovery phase — the most technically challenging stage of reusable rocketry — began after the Zhuque-3 completed its initial ascent and the first stage separated. According to LandSpace, the booster reignited its engine during descent, but an anomaly occurred early in the burn that prevented the vehicle from stabilizing and slowing enough for landing. Analysts tracking the mission noted that the booster's trajectory remained close to the intended landing site, an indicator that many elements of the guidance sequence behaved as expected.
