Chinese electric vehicle exports surged to 222,000 units in September 2025 — a 100% increase compared to the same month last year — underscoring how domestic market pressures, fierce competition, and price wars are driving automakers to seek growth abroad.

CHINA DOUBLES EV EXPORTS IN SEPTEMBER AS DOMESTIC PRESSURE FUELS GLOBAL PUSH

The surge highlights both the challenges and opportunities facing China's fast-evolving electric mobility sector as it transitions from rapid domestic expansion to global dominance.

The data, released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), shows that the country's EV makers are now leveraging their scale and cost efficiency to capture international markets just as the domestic industry begins to cool.

imageEXPORT GROWTH SIGNALS GLOBAL AMBITION

The headline figure of 222,000 exported electric vehicles represents one of China's strongest monthly performances on record. While slightly lower than August's 224,000 units, it still marks a doubling year-over-year — a pace that few global automakers can match. Much of the growth is led by BYD, the world's largest EV manufacturer, which continues to expand aggressively into Europe and other key markets.

BYD's sales in the United Kingdom soared 880% in September, making the U.K. its largest market outside China. That success underscores the company's ability to compete in established markets where brand recognition and regulatory compliance present steep barriers. BYD's performance in Europe also coincides with plans to establish a third local assembly plant in Spain, A move designed to reduce logistics costs and avoid tariff exposure while strengthening its European presence.

The export surge, however, contrasts with a moderation in domestic demand. BYD’s local sales fell by 5.5% in September — its first decline since early 2024 — even as national passenger car sales rose more than 11% compared to the previous year. The dip suggests that China's domestic market may be reaching temporary saturation, prompting leading automakers to prioritize overseas expansion as a new growth frontier.
