Blue Origin has outlined plans for a large-scale satellite communications system called TeraWave, marking a significant expansion beyond its launch and space infrastructure ambitions.

BEZOS' BLUE ORIGIN TO DEPLOY THOUSANDS OF SATELLITES FOR NEW 'TERAWAVE' COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK

The network is designed to support enterprise, government, and data-center customers with extremely high data throughput, positioning the company in a growing market shaped by cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads, and global connectivity demands. Announced this week, TeraWave will consist of 5,408 satellites deployed across multiple orbital regimes, with initial launches targeted for the latter part of 2027. The project reflects Blue Origin’s intention to build a communications business distinct from consumer-focused satellite internet offerings, emphasizing capacity, reliability, and dedicated service for institutional users.

A NETWORK BUILT FOR ENTERPRISE AND GOVERNMENT USE

According to Blue Origin, TeraWave is designed specifically for customers with large, continuous data-transfer needs, such as hyperscale data centers, defense agencies, and critical infrastructure operators. The company said the network will deliver aggregate capacity of up to six terabits per second, a level aimed at supporting Al model training, real-time analytics, secure communications, and high-availability cloud services.

Chief executive Dave Limp said the constellation is being built with enterprise requirements in mind rather than mass-market broadband. Unlike consumer satellite services that prioritize wide coverage at lower individual speeds, TeraWave is structured to provide predictable performance and service-level guarantees for a smaller, more specialized customer base.
