The portly plumber's original role-playing adventure gets the remake treatment - but how does it match up to the standards of 2023?

Super Mario RPG was originally released on the SNES in 1996 (though not in Europe); and while it’s been re-released here multiple times, it’s never enjoyed the full remake treatment… until now.

Taking Mario outside of the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond two dimensions with a fixed isometric perspective, which can make platforming sections a challenge, this Switch version retains much of the original’s look and feel but renders everything in proper 3D. There’s also a wonderful new score that feels well suited to the remake, though you can also select the original soundtrack if you prefer.
