The metaverse blurs reality, AI deepfakes identity, and cloud security battles unseen threats. As cyber risks evolve, businesses must embrace zero-trust, AI-driven defenses, and adaptive security to stay ahead. The future isn't just about protection—it’s about digital survival

The next frontier of cybersecurity

As businesses rapidly adopt emerging technologies such as the metaverse, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and biometric authentication, they face a new and expanding array of cybersecurity threats. These evolving risks, if not addressed proactively, can lead to identity theft, deepfake fraud, and cloud security breaches.

In a conversation with Sharda Tickoo, Country Manager for India & SAARC at Trend Micro, she emphasized how organizations must rethink security strategies to keep pace with these challenges. She highlighted that cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging AI, automation, and loopholes in digital infrastructure to exploit vulnerabilities, making it imperative for enterprises to stay ahead with zero-trust security frameworks, AI-driven fraud detection, and adaptive cybersecurity models.

A New Cybersecurity Battleground

The evolution of AR/VR, digital identities, and metaverse applications expands the cyber threat landscape, introducing new entry points for attackers. Biometric authentication (iris scans, facial recognition) in AR/VR devices can be compromised, leading to identity spoofing and unauthorized system access. Man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks on IoT-connected headsets can allow hackers to intercept sensitive communications or manipulate real-time data streams, posing risks to critical infrastructure.

Additionally, immersive environments increase social engineering risks, where attackers exploit haptic feedback and realistic simulations to deceive users into divulging confidential information. Compromised visionOS or AR applications can serve as malware entry points, enabling attackers to spy through cameras and microphones.
