Motorola Edge 70

A disappointing successor to the Edge 60 and 60 Pro, with no obvious reason for a huge price hike
Following on from the £1,100 Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge (see issue 371, p75) and £999 iPhone Air (see issue 375, p68), it seems that super-thin phones are the latest bandwagon for manufacturers to leap onto. Motorola has form with its £600 Edge 60 Pro (see issue 371, p74), not to mention the Edge 60, which has dropped to £299. Safe to say I had high expectations for this late 2025 update.
It started well. At 5.9mm thick, the Edge 70 is so thin that I felt duty-bound to protect it with the rigid plastic inbox case, thereby mitigating the benefits of a slender mobile in the first place. Mind you, at 159g it still feels notably lighter than the average phone.
Pantone continues its quest to paint all the Edge phones in distinct hues; this time around, we've got Gadget Grey (a mostly boring grey but with blue highlights), Lily Pad (olive green with orange highlights) and the one I used, Bronze Green (dark green with lighter-green highlights; there's no bronze to speak of). So this is already an eye-catching phone, but Motorola adds yet more visual panache via a textured back.
The Edge 70 is IP69 protected against dust and water submersion, and Motorola says it has also been tested “against 16 categories and 14 MIL-STD-810H procedures to prove its toughness”, so perhaps I needn't have clamped on that protective case. In my defence, it's solid – not one of those cheap silicon cases most phone makers put in the box – and that's shown by how tough it was to squeeze on and remove.
