The new perk system has saved the day.

It’s been two-and-a-half years since Blizzard introduced Overwatch 2. It was meant to be some grand new venture into the next stage of this hero shooter's life, changing up the game, and bringing players more interesting features to explore and enjoy.

But instead of marking the next stage of the hero shooter’s evolution, the sequel has fallen into a bit of a sluggish routine over the last couple of years, releasing seasonal battle passes every few weeks, alongside a new hero or map every now and then. It didn’t feel particularly inspiring, but I carried on playing, mostly thanks to habit with a bit of the sunken cost fallacy sprinkled in.

imageIt wasn’t until Marvel Rivals that I found myself breaking the habit of playing Overwatch 2. This new game couldn’t compare to Overwatch 2 in polish, but it was refreshing to play a hero shooter that wasn’t scared of throwing new features together and adding ridiculous yet fun heroes into the mix. But just when my Overwatch hourly numbers were at an all-time low, Blizzard announced something new, which would arrive during Season 1: hero perks.
