THE MAN.THE MISSION.THE MOMENTUM.SUNIL CHHETRI

Sunil Chhetri refuses to. In an era of instant fame and fleeting commitment, India's greatest footballer stands grounded in discipline, driven by purpose, and fuelled by pure passion. In this exclusive, heart-spoken interview, Chhetri shares why he chose to stay, what drives him more than records, and how leadership off the pitch matters just as much. This isn't a farewell story. It's a rare glimpse into a man still writing his most powerful chapters.

Ramesh Somani: Let's start with the big one: You recently reversed your decision to retire. What was the turning point or emotion that made you say, "Not yet"?

Sunil Chhetri: To put it very simply - when the country calls, you answer. I was in the middle of a good season with Bengaluru FC, was feeling fit and that made the decision easier.

RS: You're the third-highest international goal scorer of all time, right behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. How does it feel to share space on that list, and what does that record mean to you personally?

Sunil: I get asked this often, and my answer's always the same. It's an honour to share the same space with them on this front, but let's be honest - they are leagues above. Personally, I've never chased numbers or laurels - if they come along the way, great. I'm just having the best time doing what I love.

RS: From your debut in 2005 to now, how do you assess the evolution of Indian football, both on and off the pitch?

Sunil: It's been quite the journey. There is so much that has improved and gotten better, and there's aspects that have been stagnant, or moved at snail's pace. I keep saying this - it's going to need everything important to move together at the same pace, and consistently, if we are to make an honest judgement of how far we've come, and where we can.
