Rise of Fake News on Social Media
It was an uneventful summer morning on May 22, 2023 until the internet was taken by surprise with the news of large explosions taking place near the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense i.e Pentagon. The news was accompanied by a shocking image capturing the explosions near Pentagon. The news took social media by storm and even put the stock market to a frenzy. What made people believe in the post was it being shared by a Twitter (now X) account masquerading as the official page of Bloomberg. The report was then carried by Russia Today and many other major news outlet leading to millions of people briefly believing that 'large explosions' had taken place near Pentagon.
The report was obviously fake and the image was proven to be AI-generated in no time.
