The unpredictable grid

The rapid growth of data centres and EVs complicates forecasting. It is difficult to predict precisely when and where new loads will materialise.

- Jogendra Behera

The grid today faces enormous challenges.

Thanks to our system operator and a robust regulatory framework, it continues to function efficiently; otherwise, we would be staring at widespread outages. The grid has therefore become more critical than ever. With renewable energy (RE) capacity now exceeding 50 per cent of our installed base and targets of 70-80 per cent renewable capacity by 2030 and beyond, grid operations are becoming increasingly complex. Solar energy, while predictable, is intermittent. Wind is seasonal and highly variable. Hydro is climate-dependent. Together, these factors introduce significant variability and uncertainty into grid management.
