UTILITY STRIKES DEAL TO BUY POWER FROM ADVANCED NUCLEAR PLANT TO FUEL GOOGLE DATA CENTERS IN TENNESSEE AND ALABAMA

|August 22, 2025
Google is deepening its clean energy commitments in the U. S. with a new deal that will see electricity from an advanced nuclear facility supply its massive data centers in Tennessee and Alabama.
-
The agreement, announced this week by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Google, marks a significant milestone in both the deployment of next-generation nuclear technology and the tech giant’s quest to achieve round-the-clock carbon-free energy by 2030.
THE DEAL AT A GLANCE
The TVA confirmed it will purchase power from a forthcoming small modular reactor (SMR) project, with portions of that electricity earmarked specifically for Google's regional data centers. These sprawling facilities—critical to powering Google Search, YouTube, and its expanding artificial intelligence services—require immense amounts of electricity. Nuclear energy, with its ability to generate steady, carbon-free power, offers a solution to the growing tension between data center demand and the need to decarbonize grids.
Google’s two largest facilities in the Southeast, located in Clarksville, Tennessee, and Bridgeport, Alabama, have been among the company's fastest-expanding hubs, fueled by booming Al workloads and cloud demand. By tying them to a nuclear source, Google is both stabilizing its power supply and signaling confidence in nuclear as part of the clean energy future.ADVANCED NUCLEAR’S ROLE IN BIG TECH’S ENERGY STRATEGY

AI CAN HELP THE ENVIRONMENT, EVEN THOUGH IT USES TREMENDOUS ENERGY
Artificial intelligence is often criticized for its substantial consumption of electricity and water—data centers powering AI now account for roughly 1.5% of global electricity usage, with projections showing that figure could double by 2030. Yet amid the concerns, researchers are discovering compelling ways in which AI itself may help tackle climate change and reduce environmental impact.
