QUALCOMM ACQUIRES ARDUINO IN MOVE TO DOMINATE EDGE AI COMPUTING

In a surprise move that underscores the growing convergence between artificial intelligence and embedded systems, Qualcomm has acquired Arduino, the open-source hardware company best known for its DIY microcontroller boards and maker ecosystem.

QUALCOMM ACQUIRES ARDUINO IN MOVE TO DOMINATE EDGE AI COMPUTING

The deal will see Arduino operate as a semi-independent subsidiary within Qualcomm's Internet of Things (IoT) and Edge Al division — a signal that the chipmaker wants to extend its reach far beyond smartphones and PCs into the fast-growing world of intelligent, low-power devices.

Arduino, founded in 2005 in Italy, became the gateway for millions of engineers, students, and hobbyists to learn programming, electronics, and automation. Its low-cost UNO boards and open-source libraries powered everything from school robotics projects to early commercial prototypes.

Now, under Qualcomm, Arduino is being reimagined for the Al era. The acquisition includes all of Arduino’s product lines — from its UNO R4 series to industrial IoT controllers — and brings the company’s global developer community of more than 40 million users into Qualcomm's orbit.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but industry insiders estimate the deal's value at between $350 million and $500 million, based on Arduino’s recent funding rounds and market footprint.

Qualcomm said it plans to integrate its Snapdragon Al 100 and Hexagon DSP technology into future Arduino products, enabling on-device inferencing, sensor fusion, and autonomous decision-making capabilities at the edge.
