OPENAI TO LAUNCH OPEN AI MODEL AS META AND DEEPSEEK RISE
AppleMagazine
|April 04, 2025
OpenAI has announced plans to develop an open artificial intelligence model, shifting from its closed-system approach as competition from Meta and China's DeepSeek intensifies.
-

The ChatGPT developer shared the strategy during a press briefing in San Francisco, responding to rival AI offerings that prioritize accessibility and cost efficiency. For developers, businesses, and industry analysts, the move signals a significant adjustment in a market where flexibility and affordability are gaining traction.
OpenAI's decision follows the rapid growth of DeepSeek’s R1 model and Meta’s Llama series, both of which challenge the firm's position in generative AI. CEO Sam Altman outlined the initiative, emphasizing the need to address demands for customizable tools without proprietary restrictions.

The shift aligns with industry trends favoring AI solutions that allow firms to retain data control. DeepSeek’s R1, built for $5.6 million, and Meta’s Llama models, downloaded over 1 billion times, offer performance comparable to OpenAI's GPT-4, which cost over $100 million to train.
This forthcoming open model aims to adapt to a market emphasizing lower costs and greater openness.
