Elon Musk, Tesla's visionary CEO, made a bold promise earlier this week during a CNBC interview, vowing to deploy "hundreds of thousands, if not over a million" fully self-driving Tesla vehicles across U.S. roads by the end of 2026.

ELON MUSK PLEDGES HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF AUTONOMOUS TESLAS ON U.S. ROADS BY 2026

Speaking on "Power Lunch," Musk outlined plans to launch the Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas, by late June 2025, starting with a small fleet of about 10 vehicles and scaling to 1,000 within months.

For Tesla drivers, investors, and urban planners, this ambitious timeline signals a transformative push toward autonomous mobility in a $4.7 trillion electric vehicle market, though skepticism lingers given Musk's history of missed deadlines.

The announcement, coupled with Musk's new role co-leading the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), underscores his relentless drive to advance Tesla's Full SelfDriving (FSD) technology, despite regulatory hurdles and safety concerns.

Musk's declaration came during a CNBC interview where he expressed confidence in Tesla's ability to achieve widespread autonomous driving by the end of 2026, stating, "We'll probably have hundreds of thousands, if not over a million, Teslas doing self-driving in the U.S..

The initial step involves launching the Cybercab, a sleek, steering-wheel-free robotaxi, in Austin by June 2025, starting with a modest fleet of approximately 10 vehicles.

Musk emphasized a rapid scale-up, targeting 1,000 Cybercabs within a few months, with plans to expand to San Francisco and Los Angeles shortly after.

This timeline builds on Tesla's decade-long pursuit of full autonomy, with Musk repeatedly predicting Level 5 self-driving-requiring no human intervention-since 2013.

The Cybercab, unveiled at the October 2024 "We, Robot" event, is priced under $30,000 and designed for urban ride-hailing, aiming to disrupt services like Uber. Musk also teased a peer-to-peer model, allowing Tesla owners to rent out their self-driving vehicles, akin to an "Uber-Airbnb hybrid".
