CLOUDFLARE UNVEILS CONTAINERS BETA FOR EDGE COMPUTING
AppleMagazine
|June 27, 2025
Cloudflare has rolled out a public beta of its Containers product, letting developers run resource-heavy applications at the edge of its global network.
-
The platform, part of Cloudflare’s connectivity cloud, allows code to execute in secure, isolated environments, handling tasks like video processing, backend services, or commandline tools. Available to all users on paid plans, Containers builds on the Cloudflare Workers platform, offering a way to tackle computeintensive jobs without complex setup.
The system uses Docker images, enabling developers to deploy apps written in languages like Python, Go, or Rust, which were previously limited in Workers’ JavaScript-focused environment. With a network spanning over 300 cities, Containers run close to end-users, cutting latency and boosting performance. Developers can deploy globally with a single command, skipping the need to configure servers across regions, making it easier to scale apps worldwide.
Unlike traditional cloud platforms, Containers charges only for active usage, measured in 10-millisecond increments. This pay-as-you-go model, paired with automatic scaling to zero when idle, suits unpredictable workloads like batch jobs or AI tasks. The beta launch supports three instance sizes—dev, basic, and standard—ranging from 256 MB to 4 GB of memory, with plans for larger options to handle heavier workloads.SIMPLIFIED DEPLOYMENT AND CONTROL
Setting up Containers is designed to be straightforward. Developers define a Container class in a few lines of code and use the “wrangler deploy” command to push apps to Cloudflare's network. The platform handles routing, provisioning, and scaling, picking the closest data center to minimize response times, typically starting containers in two to three seconds. During development, “wrangler dev” lets coders tweak code live, with containers rebuilding instantly from the terminal.
