AIRBUS SIGNS PROVISIONAL DEAL WITH AMAZON FOR AIRLINE CONNECTIVITY

Airbus has entered into a provisional agreement with Amazon to deliver satellite-based internet connectivity to airlines, leveraging Amazon's planned Project Kuiper satellite network, the company announced during a major cabin interiors exhibition in Hamburg.

AIRBUS SIGNS PROVISIONAL DEAL WITH AMAZON FOR AIRLINE CONNECTIVITY

This deal enhances Airbus’ High Bandwidth Connectivity Plus program, aiming to provide faster in-flight internet services to its airline customers. For passengers, airline operators, and industry analysts, this collaboration marks a significant step in improving onboard connectivity options.

The agreement integrates Project Kuiper’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation, designed to offer high-speed broadband, into Airbus’ connectivity offerings for both new and existing aircraft. Airbus plans to roll out this service through its line-fit and retrofit catalogues, giving airlines a new choice for passenger Wi-Fi and operational data links. Amazon's Kuiper network, still in development, promises speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, a capability Airbus aims to harness.

imageThis partnership positions Airbus to compete in a growing in-flight connectivity market, challenging rivals like Boeing, which offers similar services through its own partnerships. Amazon's $10 billion investment in Kuiper supports this effort, aiming to rival SpaceX’s Starlink, already a key player in satellite internet for aviation.

PROJECT KUIPER POWERS AIRBUS CONNECTIVITY

Airbus will tap into Amazon's Project Kuiper, a constellation of over 3,200 low Earth orbit satellites, to provide airlines with internet connectivity exceeding current in-flight standards. Kuiper’s design targets downlink speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, surpassing the 100 megabits per second common on many aircraft today. This provisional deal positions Airbus to integrate these capabilities into its High Bandwidth Connectivity Plus program.
