UNDERDOG STORIES DOMINATE CUP CAMPAIGNS
World Soccer
|Summer 2025
Around 100,000 supporters poured out onto the streets of Aberdeen to celebrate their team's first Scottish Cup triumph in 35 years.
In a tale of two goalkeepers, Celtic's Kasper Schmeichel diverted a cross into his own net to level the scores at 1-1 at Hampden Park, then in the subsequent penalty shootout the Dons' Dimitar Mitov made two saves to give manager Jimmy Thelin a trophy in his first - somewhat topsy-turvy - season in charge at Pittodrie.
In Italy, Bologna won their first major domestic trophy in 51 years. Dan Ndoye's 53rd-minute goal gave them a 1-0 win over Milan and their third Italian Cup. An historic powerhouse of Italian football, the club has won seven league titles, though six of them were before 1941. The last was in 1964, when they beat Internazionale to the Serie A crown via a play-off after the two sides had finished level on points.
