SAUDIS AND QATARIS SET TO HOST FOURTH ROUND
World Soccer
|October 2025
Asia's qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup started two years ago, but it is almost at an end. Over 30 nations know that they will have next summer free, while six are already preparing for the tournament, having booked their spots. That leaves another six competing for the last two available automatic places. They have been divided into two groups of three for October; the winners of each will go to North America, with the two runners-up starting a playoff route.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been handed hosting duties. Some thought that they would each play in the home of the other but, no, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Iraq will play in Jeddah while Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman will meet in Doha. Home advantage is not all. The two hosts will play games one and three, meaning they get a rest while the other two teams have to play twice in three days.
The other noticeable developments are the new faces on the bench. Five of the six teams have changed coaches this year with the other, Saudi Arabia, bringing back Herve Renard late in 2024. The contracts may be new, but some are unlikely make it to the end of the year.
