Wingers to the fore for England

ENGLAND began their U20s World Championship title defence with a commanding 56-19 victory over Scotland in Verona.

Mark Mapletoft’s team played the final 25 minutes with 14 men following a red card to George Timmins for leading with an elbow in a ruck, but they showcased their attacking prowess and depth by running in eight tries for the bonus-point win.
Timmins said: “I’m disappointed with the decision, and it’s tough to let the team down like that. But the lads rallied well, and it’s a testament to the depth we have that we could finish strong. We know the challenges ahead and will work hard to improve.”
Scotland made a strong start, taking an early lead through scrumhalf Noah Cowan, who capitalised on a precise cross-field kick from fly-half Matthew Urwin. However, England responded swiftly. A no-arms tackle on winger Tyler Offiah led to a penalty try and a yellow card for Scotland’s Fergus Watson. Shortly after, Scotland were awarded a penalty try of their own when England flanker Louie Gulley was penalised for collapsing a maul.
