WINSFORD United’s home ground is located in the mid- dle of town but its football team hasn’t been the centre of attention for quite some time.

Until this season, that is, after Blues stormed to promotion as champions from the Step 6 North West Counties League (NWCFL) First Division South on the back of a dominant 25-match unbeaten sequence.

"We want to be the heartbeat for the community around us," chairman Mike Unwin told The NLP.

"The club hasn't been that for a while." Together with his fellow directors, he can take credit for reviving the Cheshire outfit's fortunes following a takeover at the start of last year when they arrived at Barton Stadium with Winsford at a low ebb.

The previous summer, Blues had asked the FA to approve their request for voluntary relegation from the NWCFL top flight rather than be moved sideways to the Midland League.

After limping to a lowly 17th place finish, they were reprieved from dropping out of the National League System altogether.
