Lawrence targets a top boss for Pools

LENNIE LAWRENCE wants “big National League club” Hartlepool United to tap into his experience and emerge from a turbulent six-year period with a longer-term plan for success.

The 76-year-old took over the managerial reins at the club on an interim basis last week following the sacking of Darren Sarll after just 15 matches in charge.

Lawrence does not think there is another club bigger than Hartlepool in the Vanarama National League and that brings increased pressure from the demands.

But the former Cardiff and Charlton boss, who is the last active manager from the first Premier League season in 1992-93 when he was in charge at neighbours Middlesbrough, thinks the expectations can also bring rewards if the right man is in charge.

But plenty have tried and failed since Raj Singh took over six years ago and Pools are looking for their 11th permanent boss since April 2018.

Lawrence, a non-executive director since 2022, is desperate for that to change.
